Tara Dhimal often thinks back to his schooling in Nepal, to classrooms where cruelty seemed like a prerequisite for teachers and where corporal punishment wasn't a taboo.
"In Nepal, the teachers are so mean," Dhimal said, recalling the beating that came after he let another student use one of his assignments as a study guide. "Someone from security called me at home. They bent me down. They hit me with a big stick. I will never forget that day."
